CONOCIMIENTO PARA TODOS
The Village of San Martin Chiquito, San Martín Sacatepèquez, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala
Maria and her family live in a a house in the village of Little San Martin in the department of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala which only has 1,700 inhabitants. 95% of the population of the village is of the Maya-Mam ethnicity. The house where Maria lives is not fit for habitation since it is so small. The one room is used for cooking sleeping and housing animals.
Maria’s parents, Juan and Marta work for the daily living of the family. Juan works with his neighbors or he has to travel to other communities to look for work preparing the ground for planting potatoes, vegetables where he is paid Q50 ( €4.8 ) for work of 8 or 9 hours per day. His salary does not provide enough money for the family to eat even though it is not a very large family.
Marta spends her day preparing food such as beans, tamales, corn tortillas and vegetables while taking care of her two children. She does not earn any salary.
Maria has a brother but they do not have a place to play. Maria accompanies her father to work in the fields where she and other children have a place to run jump and play. However they do not have any toys to play with. When the children get a little older they begin working in the fields to help their families. They do not have any other ideas or knowledge to pursue other activities to earn a living, they just focus on farming.
One of the big dreams of Maria’s is to become a teacher to be able to teach the other children because she sees the importance of education. She would also like to learn how to drive.
Maria is one of the students who has taken part in the programs offered at Conocimiento para Todos (Knowledge for Everyone) seeing that it is impossible for her parents to give her other opportunities to study. We hope that this project will open up access to education to all boys and girls. Helping children like Maria realize their dreams is the main objective of this project.

- Currently the project is helping children of the families whose lack of resouces is preventing the children from regularly attending official school. These children need educaction to be able to aquire knowledge and have more opportunities to succeed. That is why we want to unify our efforts to provide a good education to the population. That is why we are asking for your patronage in the construction of this project which will benefit more than 20 students from different areas of the community. Our objective is to meet the educational needs of the students whose families do not have the capacity to send them to school.
- Our dream for the future is to build an educacional centre in San Martin for English and computer classes.
We would like to thank you so much in the name of our stakeholders for considering helping us out in this project.
